What Is Aluminum Flashing, What Does It Do, and Where Is It Installed?

Aluminum flashing is a protective metal material used to prevent water intrusion in exterior walls and siding systems. It seals joints, redirects rainwater, andprotects vulnerable areas from leaks and moisture damage.

These flashings are made of aluminum and are custom-bent using a metal brake machine to fit eachspecific area of the building. One of the most common types is Z-flashing, typically fabricated from aluminum trim coil.

In Chicago homes and buildings, aluminum flashing is commonly installed around siding, windows, doors, dormers, roof edges, and gable walls. Proper aluminum flashing installation and aluminum flashing repair in Chicago help prevent leaks, wood rot, and costly structural damage while extending the life of the siding and exterior wall system.

Flashing Helps Prevent Water Leaks and Keeps Animals Out of the Home

Essentially, flashing helps prevent water leaks by directing rainwater away from vulnerable areas such as siding joints, roof edges, and dormers. Additionally, properly installed flashing seals small openings, helping keep birds, squirrels, and other animals from entering wall cavities.

Where Are Water Leaks and Animal Entry Most Common Around a Home?

Some of the most common areas where water leaks and animals enter homes are dormers, soffit and fascia boards, gable walls, and around windows. These areas depend on properly installed aluminum flashing to keep the structure sealed and protected.

At Pro Siding Chicago Inc, we frequently repair openings and damage around dormers and soffit and fascia areas, which are very vulnerable if flashing is missing or improperly installed. Without proper aluminum flashing installation, birds, squirrels, and other animals can easily enter and build nests inside the roof or wall cavities.

Dormers are especially sensitive because the dormer wall connects directly to the roof. Missing or poorly installed dormer flashing can allow water to penetrate behind the siding and cause interior leaks.

Another common problem area is the gable wall where siding meets brick. If the wall flashing or aluminum flashing is missing or incorrectly installed, water intrusion can occur and animals may find easy access points.

We also see leaks caused by missing or damaged Z-flashing above windows, which allows rainwater to enter behind the siding and eventually leak inside the home.

Proper aluminum flashing repair and replacement in Chicago helps seal these vulnerable areas, preventing water damage, structural problems, and unwanted animal entry.

es. When flashing is missing around soffit, fascia, dormers, or gable walls, small openings can form that allow birds, squirrels, mice, and other animals to enter roof or wall cavities. Proper aluminum flashing repair and replacement helps close these gaps and prevents animals from nesting inside the structure.

Aluminum flashing is commonly installed on dormer walls, gable walls, siding transitions, windows, roof connections, soffit and fascia areas, and eaves. These areas require properly installed flashing to redirect water away from the structure and prevent leaks behind siding and exterior walls.

Yes. When aluminum flashing is missing, loose, or improperly installed, water can enter behind siding, soffit, or fascia boards. Over time this moisture can cause rotten wood, structural damage, and interior leaks. Professional flashing repair or replacement helps stop water intrusion and protects the structure of the home.

Yes, gutters can loosen and even fall off if proper flashing is not installed. Without aluminum flashing (gutter apron), water can get behind the gutter and damage the fascia board. Over time, this causes the wood to rot and weakens the fasteners holding the gutter in place.

As the fascia deteriorates, the gutter loses support, begins to sag, separate, and in severe cases, can detach completely. Installing proper flashing helps direct water into the gutter, protects the fascia, and keeps the entire system securely attached.

Yes, gutter flashing (gutter apron) can help protect the fascia and soffit even if gutters are not installed. It directs rainwater away from the roof edge and prevents water from running behind the fascia board.

Without flashing, water can seep into exposed wood, leading to rot, mold, and structural damage. Properly installed flashing acts as a protective barrier, reducing moisture buildup and helping extend the life of fascia and soffit boards—even in areas without gutters.

I needed repair of my rooftop metal siding which was causing water intrusion. Out of the 20 or so siding companies I called, he was the only one who worked with metal siding and didn't require a complete renovation. He and his guys got us on the schedule quickly and did a through job waterproofing and repairing our siding. I really appreciated how knowledgeable he was and his willingness to take on small projects. I highly recommend him!
